Department of Psychology at Illinois State University

Students who earn their master's degree will receive an excellent graduate-level education in basic research and skills in research methods, design, and statistics, all of which prepare students for pursuing a doctoral degree in the social sciences. In the years since the inception of the graduate sequence in Cognitive and Behavioral Sciences, many students have completed their degrees, gone on to doctoral study, and moved into a wide range of rewarding academic and applied careers including:

  • Academic positions (e.g., positions in cognitive psychology, behavioral sciences, human factors, or neuroscience).
  • Research positions in non-academic settings.

While at Illinois State, students work with faculty on research, generate their own projects, and frequently present their work at national, international, regional, and state conferences. Our students also publish their original works in academic journals. Illinois State also supports the professional activities of our students through its annual Student Symposium and by providing travel support to regional, national, and international conferences. The applied goals of our students can be supported with professional apprenticeships in a variety of community agencies, as well as apprenticeships in college teaching.
