Course Objectives

In this course, you will:
    • focus on improving your understanding of the determinants of social behavior
    • increase your knowledge about the research methods of social scientists
    • improve your writing, communication, and critical reasoning skills
Social Psychology builds upon its prerequisites in the General Education Program.  The critical reasoning skills you developed in Foundations of Inquiry will help you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different research strategies used in Social Psychology research.  You will be asked to consider both the conclusions that are drawn from a particular research finding, as well as the limitations of the research.  In addition, you will be encouraged to evaluate, compare, and contrast alternative theoretical explanations for social behavior.  We will build upon your analytical skills and writing from Language and Composition by including a series of written assignments on social behaviors.  In class, you will participate in small group discussions and demonstrations, which will provide an opportunity to practice your persuasion and argumentation skills that are the focus of Language and Composition.
