Student organizations provide both undergraduate and graduate students with a multitude of opportunities to get involved with the Department of Psychology.
The Psi Chi Honor Society and Student Psychology Association (SPA) are department-sponsored student organizations that regularly meet together and plan activities relevant to students interested in psychology.
While the main goal of the Diversity Task Force is to recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds into the field of psychology, the task force is also dedicated to assisting its members and the local community in becoming well versed in the needs of children and families from various backgrounds.
The Graduate Association of School Psychology (GASP) provides a forum for school psychology students to discuss issues pertaining to the program and the profession, advance professional ethics and skills, provide a forum to share knowledge and support with other school psychology students, and allows for socialization opportunities outside of an academic setting.
Undergraduate Research Experience
In contrast to many colleges and universities, faculty at Illinois State maintain a strong commitment to undergraduate instruction and mentoring. Every semester approximately 100 undergraduate students work with department faculty in their classrooms or research labs, or complete independent study. Opportunities are also available for more advanced students to complete an internship in an applied setting. Students report that these out-of-class opportunities are among the most valuable aspects of their educational experience.

- Honors Research - (PSY 299, IDS 285, or IDS 286) students complete a research project through the Honors Program
- Independent Study - (PSY 287) students complete an in-depth study project under the supervision of a faculty member
- Internship Program - (PSY 398) students earn academic credit for completing a psychology-related work experience
- Research Apprenticeship Program - (PSY 290) students obtain research experience in a faculty member's lab
- Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Program - (PSY 291) students assist a faculty member in a classroom
Psychology majors may not earn academic credit for more than 17* hours of any combination of the following courses: PSY 287, 290, 291, 299, 390, 391, 398, and IDS 395.03.
* As of spring 2013, students are able to earn a maximum of 17 hours of out-of-class credit. This approved change will not appear in the 2014-16 Undergraduate Catalog.
