Department of Psychology at Illinois State University

Application for the Major in Psychology

Psychology Admission is Competitive

Psychology is a very popular field of study at Illinois State. Admission to the Major in Psychology is very competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee you admission to the Major in Psychology. Due to our limited resources, we are unable to accept all of the qualified applications to the Major that we receive.

Admission With 29 Hours or Less

Students seeking admission to the Major in Psychology who have completed 12-29 hours need to have:
1. at least 12 hours completed at Illinois State; and
2. established an Illinois State grade point average of at least 3.0 or higher.

Admission with 30-74 Hours

Students seeking admission to the Major in Psychology who have completed 30 hours or more, but less than 75 hours completed at the time the application is submitted, need to have:
1. an Illinois State grade point average of 2.5 or higher based on at least 12 hours completed at Illinois State, and
2. a grade of C or better in:

  • PSY 111 (or PSY 110 if taken prior to admission to the Major),
  • MAT 120, 121, 144, or 145,
  • a laboratory science course,
  • PSY 138, and
  • PSY 231.

Application Process

Students with less than 75 hours

Students who have completed fewer than 75 hours (at the end of the semester they apply to the Major in Psychology) should complete the University's online application process on My Illinois State. Log in and click on the Academics tab. Scroll down to Apply to major/minor. Click on Apply to major/minor and select Psychology. On the Apply to major/minor website, select Psychology in the Submit a New Application box. Follow the directions for completing the application. If help is needed, click on the HELP box in the upper right corner for a PDF file of instructions that will download to the computer.

Applications for the Major in Psychology are accepted and processed only during September, February, and May through July.

Students with 75 hours or more

The Department of Psychology no longer admits students who have completed 75 hours or more to the Major in Psychology. We want psychology students to have spent at least two years in the undergraduate psychology program before they graduate from Illinois State.

If you have questions about the application processes, please contact Ms. Raz Steward by e-mail.
