Basics of the Internet
The Internet is a vast system of computer networks
network -- a small group of computers connected together
The Internet provides a way to send messages, transfer files, and obtain information
Started in 1969 as a U.S. Defense project to carry government and military information in a nuclear event. Abandoned by Government but used by university professors and researchers throughout 1970s and 1980s. During 1990s became popular for everyday folk and businesses

Eudora: An e-mail program
In ISU computer labs, using Eudora requires a lab disk
Saves your personal information and settings
Choose "Make Lab Disk"

The World Wide Web
The Web is part of the Internet
Consists of files called pages or web sites
Files contain text, graphics, sound, and video
Provides hypertext links to other web pages (hypertext -- text that, when clicked, accesses a new page with relevant information)
The Web is a place to find lots of cool stuff
An interface to the World Wide Web
Navigating
Type web address (location of the file) in the "Location" box
Move around using hypertext links
Use "Forward" and "Back" buttons
Bookmarks can be created and later used to open your favorite web site

a statistics sourcebook, and SPSS.
- Use the ISU web site to find information about the Psychology department,
e-mail addresses of faculty,
and Milner Library.
- Use Yahoo! to find information about psychology self-help sites, careers in
psychology, and
psychology journals in which you may publish.
